Mixes
Over the last couple of years I’ve heard a lot of people talk about mixes. How this mix isn’t that great and how much THAT mix kicks ass.
Well. That’s horseshit.
Mixes are just like your notes.
Just as a piano or guitar is an individualistic mode of self expression, so are a studio and its mix down.
Everyone likes different kinds of recorded music.
When I was in my teens, LOVED the scooped mid sound of old school thrash like Metallica and neo thrash bands like Pantera. I liked the sound of Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. I wished the same production would’ve gone into Superunknown. It would’ve made it sound awesome I felt.
That was then. Nowadays I like a different kind of sound. I like the sound of 70s rock records. Zappa records and the like.
Anyway at the end of the day. A studio mix is nothing like the band’s going to sound live so bands shouldn’t waste time trying to “capture” their live sound in a studio.
Anyways, coming back to mixes, each mix is unique just as each person is unique. Your mix is yours to love and so is mine to me.
So, if you’re a up and coming producer and someone says “Your mixes aren’t good etc” just ask yourself:
1. Am I hearing the music I produced the way I imagined it?
2. Am I satisfied with the vibe and feeling of the song?
If your answer is yes to the above questions, you can safely ignore the fucker.
Chances are he’s a music snob. There are many out there. It’s a popular endemic. An urban pseudo-cultural disease.
Otherwise, RESEARCH and STUDY the science of music production. Know your stuff inside out and you’ll never regret it.
